HOLIDAY MEALS
A meal is served on Thanksgiving Day and on Christmas Eve in the Emergency Shelter Dining Room, 102 N. Denver. Over 2,000 hungry people enjoy these holiday feasts.
How can we provide The Salvation Army with prepared food items? They can be delivered between 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily. For more information, call 918-582-7201, Ext. 3052.
How can a person help support the holiday meals served to the homeless? Cash donations are preferred. This enables The Salvation Army to receive discounted prices for bulk purchases and allows the Food Services Manager to make specific purchases to complete the meal preparation. However, donations of turkeys, hams, wild game, pecan and pumpkin pies and other gifts-in-kind food items are also welcome.
FOOD DRIVES
The Salvation Army distributed its first food basket to needy families in the early 1900s and became the first helping agency to provide this assistance. Today during the holiday season over 5,000 food baskets are given to the area's less fortunate.
Collection of non-perishable food items from over 100 public and private schools, numerous organizations, and company food drives help fill these baskets. Each family receives a bountiful basket of food items, including baking hens, canned goods, staple items and perishable products such as milk, bread, eggs, fruit and potatoes.
How can a person help with these holiday food drives? Schools, civic groups, church organizations and companies are encouraged to have canned food drives during the month of November. Empty baskets, sponsorship documents and instructions are provided. Call 918-582-7201, Ext. 3044 for further details.
How are food drive collections delivered to The Salvation Army? If the donors are able to deliver this food, this is very helpful to The Salvation Army. These deliveries are to be made to the Christmas Joy Center.
If a pick-up is required, call 918-582-7201, Ext. 3044 to schedule a driver.
